Duke, Vernon (Vladimir Dukelsky), composer; b. Pskoff, Russia, Oct. 10, 1903. ASCAP 1934. Musical from childhood. At nine studied composition with Gliere; piano with Dombrovsky; at thirteen entered Kiev Cons, of Music. Family political exiles from Russia in 1920; he turned to music. As professional musician and composer of special material for stage, remained in New York until 1924, then returned to Europe. Composed ballet Zephyr and Flora, 1925, for Diaghilev, widely performed in Europe. World War II, enlisted U.S. Coast Guard 1942; honorable discharge, Lt. Commander, 1944. Founder and president Society for Forgotten Music, 1948. Contributor to Stage Magazine, Theater Arts Monthly, Music Publishing Journal.
